STOP THE WORLD, I WANT TO GET OFF
Sometimes grand lessons wait to be found within our
cultural stories and works of art.
Stop the World – I Want to Get Off
is a 1961 Broadway
musical (and later film) with music and lyrics
by
Leslie Bricusse and
Anthony Newley, the lead actor.
Set
against the backdrop of a metaphorical circus, it
follows the life path of the character Littlechap,
from birth to death, a poor “everyman” citizen who
seeks love, wealth, fame, and other worldly benefits
of an improved lot.
Littlechap’s first major step forward is to marry
Evie, his boss's daughter. Saddled with the
responsibilities of a family, he allows his growing
dissatisfaction with his existence and decades long
climb up the international ladder of influence and
power to lead him away from his wife and family and
into the arms of various women— a Russian Anya, the
German Ilse, and an American, Ginnie. At various
critical moments of the drama, Littlechap cries out
directly to the audience, “Stop the Wordl! I Want to
Get Off!”
As the
story unfolds, Littelchap searches the globe for
something better than he has, only to realize in the
twilight of his life that what he always had—the
love of his wife— was more than enough to sustain
him.
In our
reality of modern day America, we too appear to live
life against a backdrop of an all-too-real circus of
the absurd and abusive, a never-ending global
company of political performers and their staged
performances, each determined to distract and lure
us away from that which promises to sustain the life
and happiness of America.
The
story of America mirrors Littlechap. Our first step
towards securing and improving our lot was to adopt
the greatest governing documents ever given to
Mankind, documents that guaranteed our Rights,
Freedoms and Liberties, the Rule of Law and a
Servant Government whose sole purpose was to secure
those Rights.
But,
as with Littlechap, we have been led astray. Saddled
with engineered political distractions, we have
become apathetic and ignorant, forgetting our
commitment to that which truly sustains our Essence.
Are we
to be blindly tempted by the promises of various,
but dubious global poltical suitors as we search for
a better future?
Or are
the American People, like Littlechap, destined to
realize in the twilight of their lives that what
they always had -- the Constitution for the United
States of America -- was more than enough to sustain
not only them, but all Mankind?
We seem to be living in a mad, mad, mad world where
every day most Americans frame everything in
political, rather than constitutional terms and
focus entirely on the company of political
performers, searching for something better than they
have, and for answers to, “What went wrong; how can
we fix the system?”
As a nation, we ride the now seemingly out of
control carousel horse race, unable to stop, unable
to get off. Round and round, faster and faster,
never slowing to stop. Everything’s a blur and we
can’t even see, let alone grab the “brass ring” of
Liberty. We yell, “STOP!, STOP!” but nothing
happens.
But faith remains.
In the closing scene of the drama, the aged
Littlechap is shown the pending birth of his
grandson, and he intervenes against the Angel of
Death to protect the child, just before he (Littlechap)
passes beyond the curtain of death. From behind the
veil, Littlechap cries his challenge the audience
one final time, “Stop the world!” as he runs back
onstage to mime his own rebirth.
Metaphorically, we are facing the same moment, the
precipice of life and death, the moment between
yesterday and tomorrow, pondering our past choices
and the future for our children.
Will we, like Littlechap, awake to finally sing,
“What kind of fool am I?” Will we make the personal
commitment and sacrifices necessary to sustain the
Life and Liberty of our children, or will we abandon
America’s Essence, our Constitution?
It’s time to say, “Stop the world, I want to get
off!”
It’s time to rebirth ourselves.
It’s time to rebirth America.
It’s time to rebirth our Constitutions.

constitutional governance and government

of political performers.
Let’s get organized, remembering that the key to
Freedom is the ability to defend yourself. If you
don’t have the tools to do that, then you’re going
to be at the mercy of those who will, most
assuredly, rob you of your Freedom.
